Newtownabbey Borough Council to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre 2009/10
Artist Charles McCartney was the 2009/10 recipient of the Newtownabbey Borough Council Bursary to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.
Charles is a local artist resident in Rathcoole and he qualified as a mature student from the University of Ulster in 2007 with a BA Honours Degree in Art and Design.
Charles saw the bursary as an opportunity to explore his art and to build confidence his confidence and experience as an artist. He wanted to take his art in anew direction taking a fresh approach and being more experimental and spontaneous.
Here is what he said about his stay at the centre:
“While I was at the centre I found the general environment of the grounds and the buildings and the layout of the place was perfect for inspiration and concentration on the subject.
It was great to be around other like minded and creative people, to talk with them, share ideas and gain inspiration from them.
I was heavily inspired for about six months after I came away from the centre, exploring new areas in my painting and using some photographs and materials I gathered while there.”
