Registration of Business/Activities
Premises carrying out the activity of Electrolysis
What Is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the practice of hair removal by needles along the shaft of a hair to its roots, then passing a current through the needle. The hair is then removed painlessly.
Who can carry out the practice of Electrolysis?
Electrolysis must only be carried out by a competent, trained and experienced person at suitable premises.
Does it involve piercing the skin?
Many new electrolysis techniques do not require the skin to be pierced. If such a technique is being practiced the risks are greatly reduced and therefore the following guidance does not need to be adhered to.
What dangers are associated with Electrolysis?
There are dangers associated with electrolysis when the skin is pierced, i.e. Hepatitis B, HIV transmission, bacterial sepsis and the risk of infection being transmitted from person to person. What must I do in order to meet the requirements for registration? Any business carrying out the activity of Electrolysis in their premises is required to apply to Council for registration.
Is there a fee?
Yes, there is a one off fee of £50.
Once I’ve registered, is that all I have to do?
No. This is simply a means of informing the council where you are. Once you've registered, your premises will be inspected by an Officer from the Environmental Health Department and you should not commence electrolysis until your premises and practices have been approved. Following approval it is likely that any future inspection will be combined with an inspection under the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978, which covers additional areas of health and safety.
