A short video is available by clicking the ’videos’ tab above. Events
Newtownabbey may well be an urban area – but keep your eyes peeled in the local parks and open spaces and you never know what you might find!
Spot bluebells in April/May in shady woodland areas.
Cuckoo Flower
This plant produces pretty, white-pink cupped flowers on long, elegant stems.
You will see the cuckooflower in April-June in damp grassy areas and at the edges of river banks.
Wild Garlic
Rather than spotting this plant, you are more likely to smell the distinctive hint of garlic! Once you get the smell, look out for brilliant white flowers which will prove you sense of smell is working!
Watch out for wild garlic flowers from April onwards in open woodland and along hedgerows.
Song Thrush
These birds come from the same family as blackbirds but are slightly smaller with brown backs and are speckled on their chest.
This bird is also resident all year round but listen out for their song, a series of repeated tunes, from February onwards.
Swift
Swifts are very distinctive, dark all over with pale throats and very narrow, shapely wings. These birds spend their whole lives on the wing – even when sleeping! They only time a swift will land will be to nest.
You will probably notice the sound they make first – as screaming noise as they dash between buildings either searching for or defending nests.
Swifts are a summer visitor, arriving late April/May and leave late July/August.

In addition to harming wildlife, litter on our beaches is hazardous to people. Do your bit; take all litter home with you and never, ever flush items such as wet wipes, cotton buds or other sanitary items down the toilet.
